A Walk Around Wells

The benefits of getting out of our homes for a wander in nature are legion and have been well publicised in recent years.  For those of us whose working lives are predominantly based around working in front of one (or more) screens, time spent outdoors is even more of a positive … let alone for those of us managing on a tight budget … a place where you can sit and enjoy your surroundings … where you can take a cuppa … or maybe even a sandwich … that’s a double bonus. And a carbon footprint to be proud of !

There are plenty of lovely spaces in and around Wells without going further afield, some are more accessible, some maybe less so.  We probably learn about these just by word of mouth or meandering round the town.  There is a list of all the public green spaces in Wells which was helpfully put together by our City Council as part of their work on the Neighbourhood Plan.  You can find it on the City Council website here … it’s buried deep … and in a rather worthy format … but there none the less. You can find it here

And there are plenty of other spaces too, some of course charge. For example there’s an admission price to the Bishops Palace but then the ticket gives access for the year and for me that’s a price worth paying.

But there are other spaces too, and they don’t.  If you haven’t walked and sat for a while in The Coombe you’ve missed a treat.  You can find out more about it here

Milton Lodge and The Coombe

If you’re able to travel there are fields and walks a plenty in the countryside around Wells.  Some,  you need a car, a bike or a sturdy pair of walking legs to get to … but if you can get that sorted the world’s your oyster so to speak, well our little corner of it anyway.

If you want hints and tips maybe talk to friends and acquaintances about where they go for a wander, there’s the Tourist Information Office who have a page dedicated to cycling and walking in the area with free to download circular walking routes around Tor Hill, Dinder, Milton and Wookey Hole. Also try the Wildlife Trusts and try the rest of the World Wide Web!

So this Bank Holiday weekend why not plan a couple of local jaunts? Maybe pack a picnic? Invite some company or maybe not?  And soak up all that loveliness.

PS And my personal favourite … early morning breakfast at Westhay !
