Eating Locally & the Somerset Food Trail

A Year of Living Sustainably (AYOLS) Week Two

This week we turn our beady AYOLS eyes on to food.
No, we’ll probably not be giving you loads of info that you don’t already know but the purpose of these cheerful weekly emails is simply to enthuse us into doing a bit more than we may already be doing to live more sustainably.

Of course the overall aim is to eat a more locally and sustainably produced diet, making the most of seasonal food...while not forgetting to reduce the amount of meat and dairy we consume…and minimising waste…. and the use of processed foods.
Phew … it’s a good job we’re just doing one bit at a time!

So let’s begin this week at the height of summer in thinking about local, sustainable and seasonal foods.  Of course seasonal food can be less expensive because, as it’s in season there’s usually plenty of it around and it doesn’t come with hefty transport costs attached.

If you’re not sure about what’s available, you could do worse than take a look at the Somerset Food Trail website:

https://www.somersetfoodtrail.org/

because spookily today is the start of their Festival of Food which runs until July 30th.

There are loads of events at loads of places, so you may fancy going to loads ... or just picking one .. or even just browsing through the website. You might like to browse through the pages on Community Food and have a look at some of the growers local to us.

And if you’re free on Sunday July 30th come along to The People’s Picnic Party which , with thanks to the lovely folk at Paddington Farm who are hosting us, is our contribution to the Food Festival.  Working alongside Love Glastonbury and Feed Avalon this is a free event … but does need booking !

So what’s that one change you might fancy doing differently ?

Of course it can be a big one like getting a veg box from a local grower like Plotgate Community Farm or Root Connections - click on the names below or visit the Food Trail Website here and here

Or maybe joining in on a Community Growing project like the Forest Food Project or the Bishops Palace Community Garden - click on the names below or visit the Food Trail Website here and here

You might also decide to simply buy less veg that’s been flown in from far afield.

 It all counts !

Let us know what you decided, we’d love to share! just drop us a line at sustwells@gmail.com
