Tales of Tiny Houses

Did you know, through its Make & Mend Project, Sust Wells now has a tiny toehold in the world of Tiny Houses * ?

Make & Mend (M&M) is probably seen as a project primarily working in the area of ‘craft’.  That in itself is a pretty wonderful thing.  As the Craft Council puts it:

We believe craft skills and knowledge enrich and uplift us as individuals and can change our world for the better.

But M&M is also keen to boldly cross the boundaries and this year sees the start of just that !

During those Covid lockdowns,  everyone seemed to know someone who had a cousin or a friend who was converting a van or building a Tiny House. People had the necessary skills ... or acquired someone to help them who had skills ... or just paid for someone else to do the job.  Nowadays if you don’t have those skills it can be tricky to acquire them.

Step forward Sara Tommerup at Coed Talylan who has been running the rather popular Carpentry for Women courses  at her land on the west side of Bannau Brycheiniog

The M&M Project talked with Sara Tommerup  about the possibility of running one of her courses in Somerset (she had previous experience with this) and so now here we are in 2024, with a Coed Talylan course supported by Make & Mend running at Plotgate Community Farm from June 3rd to June 6th.
And it’s already fully booked up !

Sketch for the Plotgate ‘Tiny House’

So why write this wee story if the course is full and raring to go … well to let you know that there is a waiting list for the course … and M&M hope, if  this one is successful, to turn it into an annual event  … gradually growing our local community of those with the basic skills necessary to help one another build some tiny houses.

We hope some other Sust Wells folk might be interested so  are planning a Tea, Cake, Chat and Look event on one of the course days so that others who might be interested can come along and see what’s been achieved.
If you would like to be put on the invite list … then please email sustwells@gmail.com -  who knows where it might lead.

* If you’re new to the idea of the Tiny House maybe start with Catrina Davies’ book Homesick available to borrow through our lovely local Library

On another build

Make and Mend are also planning some one day workshops focussed on ‘Working With Fleece’ and ‘Basketry’, both will be suitable for beginners and improvers so pop us an email at sustwells@gmail.com if you’re interested in either of those.

And don’t forget the regular Make and Mend sessions are held on the last Wednesday of the month at Portway Annexe between 6.30pm and 9.00pm and all are welcome.
And it’s not all big projects, we do small too!
Here’s a beautiful bell crocheted by Kiki, one of our members.
