Second Hand September

In 2019 Oxfam launched it’s first ‘Second Hand September’ and since that time thousands of people have been inspired to shop in a way that is kinder to people and planet.

Our challenge this year is to see how many of us in Wells can follow Oxfam’s lead and donate, reuse, rewear and restyle our clothes during September.
(In Wells the Oxfam accepts and sells music and books but other charity shops are available!)

Benefits to the Planet:

  • saves valuable natural resources

  • reduces the amount of textile waste destined for landfills

  • diminishes the environmental impact associated with the production, transportation, and disposal of clothing

  • supports the principles of circular economy by promoting reusing and recycling, ultimately extending the lifespan of textiles and reducing our overall ecological footprint

Benefits to You:

  • saves us money

  • encourages a more mindful approach to consumption

  • if you adopt a ‘buy one, donate one’ approach you can support a charity and at the same time enable someone else to benefit from something you no longer love

Your New Clothing

It could be that you haven’t worn an item in a while because it needs mending, it could be that you get your ‘new’ pre-loved item home from the charity shop and see it needs the hem taking up, it has a button missing or there’s a stain or mark you thought you could get out but can’t.

Fear not! These are some of the most common mending tasks and you’ll find plenty of resources to show you how to fix them.

Here are some to start with:

Another option is to cover the stain with embroidery - link to You Tube Video

And if you want to know more about mending clothes why not join us on Wednesday 27th September at 6.30pm at the Portway Annexe for our next Repair, Repurpose, Revive meet-up - we’d love to see you.

And if you spread the word by sharing this poster at work, with your friends and in your community we and the planet would greatly appreciate it.
