World Environment Day

This 5 June join millions around the world to #BeatPlasticPollution as part of the annual World Environment Day organised by the UN.
This simple video sums up the key steps we can all take to reduce plastics:

  • avoid single use plastics

  • reuse stuff

  • repair stuff

  • recycle

  • use your voice to engage representatives and demand action

  • use your choice - buy things that don’t end up in our ocean and earth

Did you know…?

Plastic is embedded into every aspect of modern life. It is in our cars, homes, medical devices, clothes, and shampoos. Much plastic pollution is not visible to the naked eye. Microplastics – tiny fragments of plastic less than 5mm in length – are polluting our soil, water supplies and our bodies.

It’s popular because it’s relatively cheap to produce, durable, flexible and easy to transport. Made from fossil fuels production has surged over the past 50 years and is expected to double over the next 20 years.

The plastic pollution crisis stems mainly from the fact that plastic is currently produced, used (often just once) and discarded so how do we avoid, reuse, repair and recycle and use our voice and choice?

Avoid

There are plenty of single-use plastics in the home: cling wrap, coffee pods, shampoo and conditioner bottles, disposable razors and liquid soap dispensers to name a few.
When you buy something packed or wrapped in plastic just stop for a minute and ask yourself - is there an alternative?

Look at labels on clothing and avoid those made with plastic - that’s polyester, nylon, acrylic to you and me! In fact, why not just make do with the clothes you already own and extend their life by learning how to repair them. If they’re not damaged and you’re just tired or seeing the same old item learn to jazz it up with ‘revival’ skills - see below

Re-Use

If you have a plastic bottle, don’t bin it, re-use it! Where’s your favourite place to refill your shampoo, conditioner, household cleaner bottles? Are you a retailer who offers this service? - let us know so we can share!

Repair Stuff

Repair Café

We’ve been making great progress with our Repair Cafés. On Saturday we held our first Repair Café at the Library.
Read the report on how it went here and dates for future Repair Cafés in Wells, Glastonbury and Shepton Mallet here

Repair MORE stuff!

Repair, Repurpose, Revive

It was great to see more folk at our meet up on Wednesday. Who knew you could make a reusable shopping bag from fabric recovered from a broken umbrella?
Join us at our next meet-up to see how you can reduce your carbon footprint and save money creating an outfit that’s uniquely yours! You’ll find the dates here

Recycle

We’ve probably al read in the news recently about ‘wishcycling’!
If you’re unsure what can and can’t be recycled from disposable contact lens containers to pizza boxes you can check it out by visiting
https://www.recyclenow.com
Just search for an item, pop in your postcode and find out what to do.

Freecycle

Freecycle

Just like Repair Café our Freecycle events just keep growing.
You’ll find a report on the most recent event here

If you’d like to volunteer your a few hours of your time to help guide traffic and pedestrians or put out traffic cones and bunting al while getting some fresh air in good company let us know by writing to sustwells@gmail.com

Use Your Voice

Sometimes it can feel like you’re all alone in trying to halt the climate crisis.
So many of us are doing our bit, little by little and trying to make a difference but can be unaware of how many of us there are which is why we like The Climate Majority Project

Most people sense that we’re in deep trouble with climate change, and they want to do something.

The next big thing is a lot of little things.

Take a look at what they stand for and some of the plans they’re putting in place - let’s make Wells a community of support.
